Derby Cathedral Embroidery Workshop

For many years the Workshop has been making and restoring vestments and other church fabrics. Almost all the embroidered items used in the Cathedral have been made by the group. Over the years the constitution of the group has, as you might expect, changed considerably. Nonetheless, we intend to maintain the high standards set by the late Canon Leonard Childs, whose highly skilled embroidery can be seen in many places of worship, not only in the UK but elsewhere.

At any one time we can be involved with new and restoration work, not only for the Cathedral but, importantly, for other Churches. The present group has about a dozen members with a wide range of skills. In recent years we have undertaken many projects. These have included completely new vestments, altar cloths and frontals.

Restoration often is needed on older items, particularly where silk has been used. Wonderful Victorian embroidery needs careful attention and handling when it is replaced on new material.

We are always looking for new projects, as we feel that it is important to ensure that all fabric items are kept in good condition, as some of them are works of art themselves and must be preserved.

The workshop meets most Thursdays. However, space does not, unfortunately, lend itself to visits not previously arranged. Should any group wish to make a visit please contact either:
