The Friends of Derby Cathedral was founded in 1942 to form a network of support for the work of the Cathedral, care of the fabric, the improvement of facilities and help towards the musical contribution to its worship.
Through subscriptions, membership donations and fund raising events, the Friends provide money which is then used for approved Cathedral projects. Friends receive a periodic newsletter and annual report and a yearly festival is held in the Cathedral.
Each year the Friends arrange a number of visits to other cathedrals and churches and other places of interest. Recent grants from the Friends have supported work on vestments, furniture repairs, and silver restoration.
The annual subscription rates are:
- Personal £10
- Joint £15
- PCC £20
- Life £200
- Joint Life £250

*A gathering of Friends on a trip to Coventry Cathedral
The Sanctuary at Derby Cathedral is now open following an extensive refurbishment!
The refurbishment saw the previous bookshop and café merge into one business, creating a light and airy space for customers to enjoy, together with a new range of locally produced gifts and products of which at least 80% of the gifts have come from Derby and Derbyshire. We are stocking chocolate to candles, gin to vegan friendly marshmellows and some quirky and different gifts which you may not generally find on the High Street. We have some very talented suppliers in the city and county and Derby Cathedral are proud to support these businesses.
A fresh, new menu is also available, created and prepared by our qualified chef using locally sourced ingredients.
The Sanctuary at Derby Cathedral is also open on Sundays, serving traditional Sunday lunches and delicious hot and cold desserts. We are also open for key events held in the Cathedral so people can experience pre-event dining before attending an event in the Cathedral – an ‘evening out’ experience in very pleasant and unique surroundings.
The main purpose of the business is to financially contribute towards the work of the Cathedral, so customers can be assured that every penny spent in the shop will, in some way, help support the important work the Cathedral does in working with homeless people of the city, those with mental health issues and generally in keeping the doors open for everyone.
Derby Cathedral is to make changes to the layout and operating structure of the Cathedral Bookshop and Cafe and rebrand it as The Sanctuary at Derby Cathedral. The aim is to improve its appeal to visitors and to strengthen the support the business provides for mission and ministry.
The Sanctuary at Derby Cathedral will have a very different look and feel to the current Bookshop and Cafe. We firmly believe that there will be many new and returning customers who will welcome the new, high-quality experience.
Whilst a very small number of customers have voiced concerns about the changes, we hope that they will take the opportunity to try The Sanctuary at Derby Cathedral, and thus continue to support the work of the Cathedral itself.
The Sanctuary at Derby Cathedral is designed to serve four main purposes: to support the mission and ministry of our wonderful Cathedral, to sell and provide Christian books, to be a space for customers to enjoy a quality leisure experience with excellent food and refreshments, and to promote locally manufactured gifts.
The Sir Richard Morris Lounge, on the lower floor of the building, will continue to be available for use by a number of voluntary groups, and also be available to hire.
Additionally, the main space will be available to hire for functions outside of our normal opening hours. The Sanctuary at Derby Cathedral will retain its current online presence (on Amazon) and aims to offer a new online ordering experience in the future.
We will close on Saturday 30th March 2019 for a minimum of one week, a re-opening date will be announced in the near future.

Preach the gospel of Christ and nurture Christian leadership, in collaboration with the churches and traditions and with sensitivity to other faiths
Extend hospitality to pilgrims and visitors of every kind
Demonstrate the concern of Christ for the poor
Engage with the city and the county, with corporate life and institutions, in the complexities of contemporary society and culture, and explore spiritual values with all people of goodwill
Share as the mother church, with the parishes of the diocese in every aspect of the Church’s vocation
