The most-visited attraction in Derby, the Cathedral has recently undergone extensive renovation and is now attracting even more visitors. Visitors are appreciating the building, its monuments and history, undertaking tours of the Tower and enjoying the calm reflective environment of the Cathedral. The Cathedral has wheelchair access to all areas, except a small side chapel and the Bridge Chapel (located a short distance away on Sowter Rd).

 

Opening Times

The Cathedral is always open from 8.30 am - 5.30 pm, 7 days a week. Many evenings we open later depending on events and services, see our What's On guide and Service times for full details. On Bank Holidays we open to the public from 9.00 am - 5.00 pm.

Facilities 

Toilet facilities are available in the front porch of the Cathedral and disabled toilet facilities are available downstairs (accessible via a lift).There are emergency toilet facilities only at the Bridge Chapel (no disabled facilities).

 

Guided Tours

A tour of the Cathedral can be pre booked, for a group, organisation or club, with an experienced guide. The Cathedral Guide will provide information on the history of the Cathedral and monuments, providing insight into the Cathedral at work. £4.50 per Adult, £2.25 per child.

 

Education Visits

The Cathedral's educational programmes match the learning outcomes of the Derby and Derbyshire agreed syllabus for Religious Education. The Cathedral also offers unique learning opportunities for other curriculum areas - mathematics, history, art, engineering

 

Tower Climbs

There is the opportunity to climb one of the tallest church towers in England, at 212 feet and having 189 steps. Festive climbs are available, to include mince pies and mulled wine, on selective dates. Also dates are available during the year to climb the tower as a standalone experience, or maybe combined with a tour of the Cathedral. Children must be over 8 years of age. Requires suitable footwear and general medical fitness.

Discover the Cathedral’s Silver Treasures

View and discuss the history of the Cathedral’s treasures, with the Keeper of the Treasures. 30 minute talk, can be added to a tour of the Cathedral, or standalone talk for a minimum of 10 people.

 

Bridge Chapel Visit

Visit the Bridge Chapel, the Chapel of St Mary on the Bridge, a five minute walk from the Cathedral, with an experienced guide.
