The Bakewell Gates outside Derby Cathedral are to undergo complete restoration and to be given a new name -thanks to the generosity of the Derbyshire Lieutenancy.
The ornate gates which form part of the main entrance to the Cathedral look in reasonable shape from a distance. “But when you get close up you can see how much they need to be restored and we are absolutely delighted by the generosity of The Lord Lieutenant and Deputy Lieutenants, “said Dr John Davies, Dean of Derby today.
After the restoration is complete (subject to final planning consent) the gates will be presented to the Dean & Chapter at next year’s special service to mark HM The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.
“At that service we plan to rename them as “The Queen Elizabeth II Gates” in commemoration of the Queen’s two visits to Derby Cathedral during her reign,” added Dr Davies.
The gates featured a great deal on images of The Queen and Prince Philip during their visit to the Cathedral last year.
