“Twelve Mysteries” Exhibition
Twelve Mysteries, acrylics by Michael Cook, is the exhibition in the Sir Richard Morris Lounge at the Cathedral throughout February and March.
The exhibition maintains our tradition of having a specifically Christian theme during Lent and Easter.
The ‘mysteries’ are some of the nameless characters who appear in the gospel accounts of Jesus’ life. For example, the young man who, in Mark’s account of Jesus’ arrest, runs away naked.
Michael was born and spent most of his life in Melbourne, where the barns, fields and hedgerows of the surrounding landscape became a constant source of visual stimulation.
He now lives in Derby, where he trained and worked as a graphic designer before becoming a full time artist, often taking inspiration from lines of poetry when depicting human figures and animals.
Michael said today; “As well as being influenced by twentieth century art movements like cubism and fauvism, older mediums used to create devotional art find their way into my images; the strong lines and colours of stained glass, the stylised, melancholy figures and faces in icons, and the richness of tapestry and illuminated manuscripts.”
The exhibition will end on Easter Eve (3rd April).
