Copper into Gold and Captured Light

Derby Cathedral will this month feature two exhibitions. In the Sir Richard Morris Lounge (at the Cathedral Centre) from 1-29 February (Monday-Saturday, 9am-3.30pm) is Copper into Gold. The Cavendish area of the Cathedral will host Captured Light from 1-21 February (everyday, 8am-6pm).
Copper into Gold is a loan exhibition from the Derby Museum’s collection of mezzotints by the Derby born artist John Raphael Smith (1751-1812) one of the most celebrated and prolific print makers of the 18th Century.
His prints after leading artists – including Joseph Wright of Derby, Sir Joshua Reynolds, and George Romney – were not only popular but highly profitable. Since the printing process began by engraving an image on a copper plate, Smith’s success led him to boast that in printmaking he had discovered ‘the secret of converting copper into gold.’
Captured Light consists of images created last summer as part of the Wright of Derby Festival. Local artist and photographer Angelika Dennis initiated a series of workshops based on Wright’s love of special effects using light.
Members of the public were invited to create photographic art in 10 seconds or less at a series of participatory workshops.
Angelika Dennis said: “The images I create involve careful planning in order to create something eye-catching. Adapting my method of creating these images for the Festival allowed me the opportunity to get the public involved in the celebration of the work and life of Joseph Wright in a way they have probably not experienced before.”
Over 150 members of the public participated in the workshops, creating 114 images. Some fourteen A2 prints, displaying several images on each in a variety of ways, will be exhibited in the Cavendish Area of the Cathedral.
Cathedral Connections
A solo exhibition by Geraldine Yvonne Smith
Sat 17 December 2011 - Fri 24 February 2012
This exhibition is inspired by Derby Cathedral's 'All Souls & All Saints' windows designed by Welsh artist Ceri Richards in the 1960's. The images created are not realistic representations but reflect more upon the spectacular emotional associations and impact the windows have on entering the Cathedral alongside the light and airy atmosphere the overall interior provokes.
The works are produced by means of a combination of fine art printmaking techniques together with some collage & stitch work, deconstructing and restructuring of images to enhance the richness of the designs.
Geraldine is a member of Derby-based open access studio, Green Door Printmaking Studio.
